Institutional Review Board

To begin the IRB review process, you need to create an account and complete the Online IRB Application.

The Institutional Review Board is a standing committee dedicated to the enforcement of the protection of human rights in the context of research.

Guidelines for Human Subject Research

The primary purpose of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research activities conducted under its jurisdiction.

As required by federal law for research supported by a federal department or agency, the IRB shall ensure that 1) physical, psychological and social risks to research subjects are minimized, and when present, justified by the importance of the research and/or the knowledge to be gained; and 2) potential and participating research subjects are appropriately informed of the nature of the research, the risks involved, and their rights as a research subject.

As a secondary purpose, the IRB seeks to ensure that the University, affiliate institutions, and the investigators that it serves are compliant with the ethical standards and regulations governing human subject research.

The IRB shall be guided by the ethical principles set forth in the Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects for Research (the Belmont Report) for all human subject research activities that fall under its jurisdiction regardless of source of support. While the mission of the Robert Morris University includes research for the benefit of the public, the rights and welfare of individual human research subjects shall always take precedence.

It is the responsibility of each student to report to the professor in charge of the course or to the Institutional Review Board any suspected violations of the guidelines for human subject research.
